Wreck-It Ralph
« on: February 17, 2012, 08:56:12 PM »
I've been keeping an eye on one of the newest Disney movies, Wreck It Ralph, since D23. The premise is a classic arcade game villian is tired of be bad and so on, but I fell on to this and it really peaked my interest.

My additude was if they know who Dr. Wiley is and care to work out all of these licenses, I'm down... Please ruin this Disney.

He may not be considered a villain, maybe he's this 'support group's leader or counselor. I don't think we'll know until the movie comes out.

I am certainly interested in the idea of all these video game characters coming together, but I have a feeling that it's most likely just going to be a big gimmick, and they won't have any concrete story or really good characters to back it up.  It's a pretty cool idea though, and if they manage to pull it off, we might even have our first good video game film

What I've seen of this movie looks promising.

i feel like if disney can really touch on how video games made kids feel back in the day, this could be great.

See, I didn't know Wreck-It Ralph was a real game. Because the other night on the podcast, I kind of agreed with Eric when he mentioned it might be cooler if the movie had it's own little self-contained world of video game characters. The fact that the movie is about a real, and ungodly obscure, video game antagonist interacting with all of these other big shot antagonists, from today's well known video game franchises, makes this movie so much cooler to me.

If done right, this could be almost as good as Roger Rabbit.

I'm pretty sure that was just a promotional thing for the movie.  Fix it Felix Jr. is not an actual game.

EDIT: Also check out the plot description from Wikipedia:
"Wreck-It Ralph is the 9-foot-tall, 643-pound villain of an arcade video game named Fix-It Felix Jr., in which the game's titular hero fixes buildings that Ralph destroys. Wanting to prove he can be a good guy and not just a villain, Ralph escapes his game through the power cord and lands in Hero's Duty, a first-person shooter where he helps the game's hero, Sergeant Calhoun, battle against "Cy-Bugs", the game's alien invaders. He later enters Sugar Rush, a kart racing game set on tracks made of candies, cookies and other sweets. There, Ralph meets Vanellope von Schweetz, one of that game's characters, who has learned that her game is faced with a dire threat that could affect the entire arcade, and one that Ralph may have inadvertently started"

If that's for real, I'm actually legitimately excited. Apparently John C. Reilly is gonna be voicing Ralph.  Also "Hero's Duty" made me laugh.

DUMB

Edit response- Yeah, I don't know how to feel that it's a world of made up characters, and real ones. Like, I think it would be really funny if they made it a world of made up ones, and then had a brief cameo gag by Bowser or somebody. I guess it really depends on the roles they all play, but this could end up feeling pretty messy if they mix both types, and the roles are equally weighted.

One thing that makes me excited is that it's being directed by Rich Moore, who has previously directed some of the best episodes of The Simpsons and Futurama.

Mixing real characters with fake ones could work. This might sound like a bad example, but the one thing I liked about the show "Entourage" was how they mixed the main character "Vincent Chase" with real life actors and directors. That worked out pretty well for them. Just depends on how they introduce those characters into this world.
